Refugee Services Director Sr. Hala Halabi visited Senator John Cornyn’s office on August 13 to discuss the impact of the government’s refugee ban on the local community. She was joined by Rooha Haghar and Daley Ryan from the International Rescue Committee in Texas, Suann Claunch from the Forth Worth Independent School District, Hadidja Nyiransekuye, a UNT professor in Social Work and Joe Jenkins from Veterans for American Ideals.
There, the group met with Regional Director Collin McLochlin and Deputy Director Kamal Fulani. They advocated for at least 75,000 more refugees to allowed to resettle in the US in fiscal year 2018, and that the budget provide adequate funding for refugee resettlement and integration programs. Currently, the proposed budget for fiscal year 2018 makes significant cuts to refugee programs.
Sr. Hala and the team also talked about local initiatives to show support for refugees and and the need to expand Special Immigrant Visas to help refugees fleeing war.
